Eye Drops Sold at Walmart Now Part of Ever-Growing Recall
The FDA has pulled many products off of the shelves in recent months
Consumers have a new eye drop to avoid in the big box store.
On Monday, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) updated its list of dangerous eye products to include Equate Hydration PF Lubricant Eye Drop 10 mL, which is sold at Walmart. According to the updated alert, Walmart is pulling the product from shelves and its website.
It comes after the agency issued a recall last Friday of retailer-brand eye products like Target’s in-house brand up & up, CVS and Rite Aid. Inspectors found unsanitary conditions at the manufacturing sites for these products, and tests showed that bacteria had contaminated some of the products.
Earlier this year, contaminated eye drops led to vision loss in 14 people, and four people died.
These products, according to the FDA, are meant to be bacteria-free, and applying contaminated eye drops could bypass some of the body’s natural defenses against bacteria, leaving the eye vulnerable to infection.
The alert says that people who have used any of the below products and have signs of an eye infection should speak to a healthcare provider as soon as possible:
