Zack Snyder Defends His ‘Justice League’ Stars Amber Heard and Ezra Miller

The filmmaker says he'd collaborate again with Heard 'in a second'

Zack Snyder would work with Ezra Miller and Amber Heard again in a flash.

The filmmaker cast both actors in the so-called Snyder-Verse, with Miller debuting as the Flash in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Heard joining DC as Mera in 2017's Justice League. But, in recent years, both stars have found themselves embroiled in highly-publicized controversy. In the lead-up to their character finally getting the solo film treatment this year in Andrés Muschietti's The Flash, Miller was involved in a number of legal and personal incidents that led to reports that Warner Bros. was considering recasting the role. (However, multiple sources told The Messenger that Miller was never truly in danger of losing the part.)

Despite the film being a critical and commercial bomb, Miller still has a fan in Snyder. “[They] did a great job in that Flash movie,” Snyder told THR, revealing that the two occasionally keep in touch. “It’s very difficult to play against yourself.”

Meanwhile, with James Gunn set to reboot DC, the final film in the Snyder-Verse, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, is set to open next month. There's already been discussion about whether Heard's role as Mera was "pared down" due to the drama surrounding her divorce from Johnny Depp. For his part, Aquaman director James Wan said he always envisioned the sequel to be more of a bromance between Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and his brother Orm (Patrick Wilson), whereas the original film was focused on the romance of Aquaman and Mera.

Regardless, Heard has been the target of constant online abuse, and Snyder is baffled by it all. “I just don’t get it,” he says. “If other people don’t like her, I don’t know what to say. I would work with her in a second.”

Snyder's new film, Rebel Moon, hits Netflix on Dec. 22 — the same day Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom swims into theaters.
