With ‘The Good Doctor’ Delayed, Watch This Addictive Medical Show Instead
Many fall TV favorites have been impacted by the Hollywood strikes, so the Messenger is offering up some enticing alternatives in the meantime
Fall TV season is here, but many fall favorite shows you expected to return are delayed until further notice, including The Good Doctor.
The writers guild and actors union have been on strike for months, protesting for fair wages and protections against AI in Hollywood. Until the writers, actors and studios work out an agreement, scripted shows and unscripted shows that employ writers guild members cannot return. This means we're going to have to wait a little longer to check in with Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) and the rest of the team at St. Bonaventure Hospital.
When we last saw Shaun, he and Lea (Paige Spara) welcomed their newborn baby, Steve, into the world. Shaun and Dr. Glassman (Richard Schiff) are still at odds after Shaun's incessant hounding about Glassman's slipping attention to detail forced Glassman to realize his surgery career was over. Meanwhile, Perez (Brandon Larracuente) decided to leave St. Bonaventure after being injured on an emergency scene. He was given painkillers to deal with the wounds, and it set him back to square one in his addiction recovery, so he is leaving to focus on his sobriety.
We don't know what's next for Shaun or his coworkers, or exactly when The Good Doctor will return on ABC, but The Messenger does have some ideas about what you can watch while you wait.
If you like 'The Good Doctor,' watch 'House'
Before The Good Doctor, executive creator David Shore was best known for another medical procedural: House. Hugh Laurie stars as the eponymous Dr. Gregory House, a narcissistic physician and master diagnostician. House doesn't come with the warm, sentimental feelings that The Good Doctor does, but Dr. House is singularly gifted like Shaun, so it is the perfect substitute for The Good Doctor fans who love the medical marvel side of the show.
House also depends on a group of committed hospital staff who rally together when the head of their team is determined to make their lives miserable. You get sucked into their drama and relationships, just like you do on The Good Doctor when Shaun is being over the top.
