Why Michael Cera Wasn’t on ‘Barbie’ Group Text: ‘I Have a Flip Phone’

'I still think I wouldn't belong on [the group chat] anyway,' said Cera, who plays the twice-discontinued doll Allan in Greta Gerwig's 'Barbie'

Michael Cera appears to be living off the grid from Barbieland.

Although the stars of Barbie started a group text while filming, the Superbad alum admitted to People that he's not in on the conversation for one very practical reason.

"I dont have an iPhone myself... I have a flip phone," Cera explained. "But I still think I wouldn’t belong on [the group chat] anyway, because [my character] Allan is sort of in his own little world."

"[Director Greta Gerwig's] gift for me when I arrived was a picture disc of NSYNC’s No Strings Attached, which felt like somehow a real guiding light in the backstory of this character," added Cera.

Mattel's Allan doll was introduced into the Barbie universe in 1964, one year after the debut of his wife and Barbie's best friend, Midge, who was created to combat criticism that the original doll was "too sexy."

Although they were retired in the '60s, they enjoyed a reboot in the 1980s (this time, Alan's name was spelled with one L). But they were discontinued again in 2002, shortly after a new pregnant Midge doll drew controversy.

Pregnant Midge makes a comeback alongside Cera's Allan, with Emerald Fennell portraying the doll with a baby bump in Gerwig's highly anticipated summer blockbuster.

Barbie premieres July 21 in theaters.
