Treat Williams Remembered for His 'Heart of Gold' After Motorcycle Accident Death at 71 - The Messenger

Hollywood remains in shock following the sudden death of Treat Williams at age 71. The Hair and Everwood actor died after a motorcycle accident near his home in Vermont on Monday evening.

As soon as the news spread, colleagues across the industry began sharing their remembrances of Williams and condolences to his family:

  • Everwood star Emily VanCamp wrote on Instagram: "💔The many times we worked together- always wonderful and I was always excited for the next time. Sending all my love to your family Treat. Fly high my friend ✨"
  • Sarah Drew, who starred in Everwood with Williams, wrote that she is "So utterly heartbroken" alongside a photo of her and Williams together on Instagram. "Sending so much love to #treatwilliams family. 💔💔💔"
  • Kim Cattrall paid tribute with a photo of her and Williams from their 1999 film 36 Hours to Die. "I’m in shock! RIP Dear Treat. My condolences to Pam, Gilles, Ellie and the family. A wonderful actor and friend," she wrote.
  • John Travolta reflected on working with Williams, posting a photo from a Broadway show on his Instagram Story. "Treat Williams and I got our start together in NYC appearing in 2 Broadway shows, "Grease" and "Over Here"," he wrote over the image, adding, "I'm so sorry Treat. My thoughts are with you and your family. You will be missed. Love, John"
  • Billy Baldwin remembered Williams with heartfelt words via Twitter. "He had it all. Smart. Talented. Funny. Charming. Successful. Handsome. Compassionate. Heart of gold. And that name... Treat Williams. He truly and deeply cared about what's going on here in America and around thew orld. Climate change, social justice, freedom, truth, tolerance...love." He continued, "Beloved by his family, friends, fans, colleagues... his community. A terrible loss. You will be missed. Rest in power Treat."
  • Sharon Stone also reacted on her Instagram Story, writing, "Sad News Rest in Peace Brother"
  • Melissa Gilbert posted a throwback photo of the late actor on Instagram, expressing shock over his death in the caption. "This is not real," she wrote. "It can’t be. Oh, This one hurts. #rip #treatwilliams"
  • In the comment section, actress Joely Fisher wrote, "F------ awful" and Mindy Cohn added with a broken heart Emoji. Go-Gos bassist Kathy Valentine also commented with a crying Emoji.
  • Actor James Woods also shared a thoughtful memory about Williams on Twitter. "Treat and I spent months in Rome filming Once Upon a Time in America," he recalled. "It can be pretty lonely on the road during a long shoot, but his resilient good cheer and sense of humor was a Godsend. I really loved him and am devastated that he’s gone. #RIP #TreatWilliams"
  • David Alan Grier wrote, "Ahhhhhh mannnnn! I jus devastated! This is breaking my heart. Treat Williams rest in peace. One of the truly nicest guys I’ve ever met! My prayers go out to Treat’s family…what a loss. So, so so sad 🙏🏾🕊️🙏🏾"
  • "Terribly sad to hear #TreatWilliams died today , on the road.," wrote Sam Neill. "Treat was about the nicest , most likeable guy you could imagine. How awful this is ."
  • Wendell Pierce remembered Williams as "a passionate, adventurous, creative man. In a short period of time, he quickly befriended me & his adventurous spirit was infectious. We worked on just 1 film together but occasionally connected over the years. Kind and generous with advice and support. RIP"
  • Sharon Lawrence posted smiling photos of her, Williams, and their Hallmark co-stars and wrote, "🧵This how it felt to be with #TreatWilliams. Always an joyful adventure. I’m just stunned. My heart aches for the loss. What a remarkable man. @Rtreatwilliams enjoyed his life so much. He created a beautiful existence & example of solid love. He was honest& clear, dedicated to his family and passions. I can’t imagine his loved ones loss - it’s just shattering. My consolation is all the great memories and that he did what he loved doing until the end. Soar high, dear friend."
  • Treat's White Collar co-star Matt Bomer shared a clip from the series, adding that he is "Devastated to hear of the death of #TreatWilliams following a motorcycle accident. He was amazing as Neal's father in #WhiteCollar, especially loved this scene with #MattBomer. Deepest sympathy to his loved ones."
  • "Treat Williams. Devastating. A very good man," Williams' 1941 co-star Michael McKean wrote.
  • "Working with Treat Williams in Mamet's 'Speed the Plow' at Williamstown in '91 was the start of great friendship," Justine Bateman shared. "Damn it, damn it. Treat, you were the best. Love you."
  • "Treat Williams played so many great roles (Smooth Talk being a fave), but when I think of him, I always come back to this scene in Hair," Donal Logue wrote. "Rest easy, Treat."

Williams' longtime agent Barry McPherson confirmed his death to People, who was first to report the news.

"He was killed this afternoon. He was making a left or a right [and] a car cut him off," he shared. "I'm just devastated. He was the nicest guy. He was so talented."

"He was an actor's actor. Filmmakers loved him. He's been the heart of Hollywood since the late 1970s," McPherson added. "He was really proud of his performance this year. He's been so happy with the work that I got him. He's had a balanced career."

Most recently, Williams reprised his recurring role as Lenny Ross in a May episode of Blue Bloods. The three-time Golden Globe nominee is survived by his wife Pam Van Sant and their two children, Gille and Ellie.
