‘The Sound of Music’ Soundtrack Gets Deluxe Treatment with Extended, Remastered Reissue
The definitive Super Deluxe Edition features more than 40 previously unreleased tracks, including 11 never-before-heard alternate takes from the making of the movie and other rare cast performances
The hills are alive with the remastered sounds of 1965's The Sound of Music!
Nearly 60 years later, the soundtrack to the feature adaptation of Rodgers and Hammerstein's beloved musical will be reissued on Dec. 1 in an extended, remastered format.
The definitive Super Deluxe Edition features more than 40 previously unreleased tracks, including 11 never-before-heard alternate takes from the making of the movie and other rare cast performances.
While the deluxe reissue is available for preorder, fans of the movie can now hear an alternate take Julie Andrews' opening number "Prelude / The Sound of Music," which is available for streaming and download.
Based on the 1959 Broadway musical, The Sound of Music tells the story of Maria Von Trapp (Andrews), an Austrian nun-in-training who becomes the governess to a widowed naval commander's seven children as the country falls under Nazi occupation.
Although the role was originated on Broadway by Mary Martin, Andrews previously confessed in the The Billboard Book of Number One Albums that she never listened to the original cast recording before taking on Maria herself.
"I didn’t consciously try to be different," said Andrews. "I just tried to serve the music and the lyrics as best as I could."
