A ‘Suits’ Spinoff With Meghan Markle? Here’s What She’s Said About Returning to Acting

Patrick J. Adams was asked if he'd return for a 'Suits' spinoff, but the real question is for Meghan Markle

Suits may be living on, but Rachel Zane seems to have permanently retired. The long-ended USA Network drama became the most talked about show of summer 2023 thanks to Netflix, and it has basically triggered a Suitsassaince. NBCUniversal is working on a spinoff, USA Network is trying to revive its Blue Skies era, and some of the cast reunited on stage at the Golden Globes. Unfortunately, all of that also means that Patrick J. Adams, who starred as Mike Ross, husband of Markle's character Rachel, is getting asked things like, "Would you ever team up [with Meghan Markle] again? Would you do a spinoff or something?"

After being asked those exact questions by E! News on the Golden Globes red carpet, Adams said, "I think Meghan's a fantastic actress and we'd be lucky to have her back in the industry. ... I'm ready. Mike and Rachel in Seattle."

Unfortunately for the big Mike and Rachel fans, and with no disrespect to him, Adams' opinion is not really the one that's going to make waves here. Why would he, a working actor, ever say no to the idea of a spinoff with Mike and Rachel? The issue is with Rachel herself, as Meghan Markle is very busy not being an actress anymore. She retired from acting when she married Prince Harry, and has made that pretty clear.

Here are just a couple of the things she's said about her future and her former profession:

"I have ticked this box."

Shortly after she became engaged to Prince Harry, the couple sat down with the BBC. Markle spoke about her career change, explaining that she didn't see leaving Suits as "giving up her career."

"I don't see it as giving anything up. I just see it as a change," she said. "It's a new chapter, right? And also, keep in mind, I've been working on my show for seven years. So we're very very fortunate to be able to have that sort of longevity on a series and for me, once we hit the 100 episode marker I thought, you know what, I have ticked this box and I feel really proud of the work I've done there and now it's time to work as a team with you."

"I'm done."

In a 2022 Variety interview, Markle was asked, "Would you ever consider going back to acting?" Markle said: "No. I'm done. I guess never say never, but my intention is to absolutely not."

And here's what a WME spokesperson said when Markle signed with the talent agency in April 2023:

"Acting will not be an area of focus."

In the months since, there have been many reports of a return to acting (beyond the brief cameo she made in a coffee ad in December), but Markle herself has yet to prove any of them correct, or comment on them. She did, however, comment on Suits' resurgence to Variety in November.

"Isn't that wild?" she said. "It was great to work on, such a great cast and crew. We had a really fun time. I was on it for seven seasons, so quite a bit. But it’s hard to find a show you can binge-watch that many episodes of these days, so that could have something to do with it. But good shows are everlasting."
