‘Succession’ Star Brian Cox Reads Poem From Late Palestinian Poet Refaat Alareer
The Scottish actor read late Palestinian poet Refaat Alareer's poem 'If I Must Die' as a part of the Palestinian Festival of Literature in London
The poem "If I Must Die" from late Palestinian poet Refaat Alareer is garnering millions of views on social media after a reading from Brian Cox.
On Tuesday, the X account for the Palestinian Festival of Literature shared a video of the Succession star performing the poem.
"Brian Cox is unable to join us on stage in London tomorrow night - so here he is, reading 'If I Must Die,' by beloved Palestinian poet, teacher and martyr Refaat Alareer," the organization shared Tuesday on Instagram. "Refaat was killed on December 7th by an Israeli airstrike. This was the last poem he published. His body is unburied under the rubble."
The poem was published on Nov. 1, just over a month before Alareer was killed in an airstrike in Gaza. Since being posted on Tuesday, the Scottish actor's reading has garnered over 10 million views on X.
The reading was recorded as a part of the festival's event titled How Empires End in London on Wednesday.
Cox is not the first member of the Succession cast to speak out as the war in Israel and Gaza rages on. Hiam Abbass, the Palestinian actress who played Cox's character's wife in the hit HBO series, recently released a documentary about returning to her hometown of Nazareth many years after moving away.
