Spring Broadway Preview: What’s Coming to the Stage This Season

The Messenger takes a look at what is coming to Broadway stages in New York City this spring

Along with the start of a new year comes a fresh (and packed!) season on Broadway that will culminate in the 2024 Tony Awards. An array of new plays and musicals — from heavily anticipated film adaptations to revivals and original material — will light up stages in the heart of New York City. 

The Messenger shares a preview of the 18 new additions to the slate of Broadway shows in the coming months, as well as the few that will bid farewell.

Premiering on the Great White Way:

Opening Night: Jan. 9
Where: Samuel J. Friedman Theatre
Writer Joshua Harmon and Tony Award-winning director David Cromer bring this critically acclaimed play to Broadway for a limited engagement starring Betsy Aidem, Francis Benhamou, Ari Brand, Anthony Edwards, Ethan Haberfield, Richard Masur, Nael Nacer, Daniel Oreskes, Molly Ranson, Nancy Robinette and Aria Shahghasemi. The story follows the history and deeply-rooted societal challenges of a French Jewish family. 

Opening Night: Jan. 28
Where: Studio 54
Tony Award winner Kelli O'Hara and Tony nominee Brian d'Arcy James star in the Broadway premiere of Days of Wine and Roses for a 16-week limited engagement. Adapted from the 1962 film and original 1958 teleplay by JP Miller, the original musical features a book by Tony Award nominee Craig Lucas, music and lyrics by Tony Award winner Adam Guettel and direction by Tony Award nominee Michael Greif. O'Hara and James portray a 1950s New York couple who must battle their demons and addictions to save their family.

Opening Night: Feb. 29
Where: American Airlines Theatre
A veteran cast including Tyne Daly, Liev Schreiber, Quincy Tyler Bernstine and Zoe Kazan lead John Patrick Shanley's Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Set in 1964 at an all-boys Catholic school, faith and moral codes are put to the test when the concerning possibility arises that a teacher may have had relations with a student.

Opening Night: March 14
Ingrid Michaelson brings musical life to this stage adaptation of the beloved 2004 romance film based on the bestselling novel from Nicholas Sparks. Directed by Michael Greif and Schele Williams and starring John Cardoza, Dorian Harewood, Maryann Plunkett, Jordan Tyson, Ryan Vasquez and Joy Woods, the production chronicles a full-circle love story unfolding over the course of decades.

Opening Night: March 18
A star-studded cast led by Jeremy Strong, Michael Imperioli and Victoria Pedretti takes on Amy Herzog's modern iteration of Henrik Ibsen's 1882 drama centered on a man whose town tries to punish him for exposing the truth about the ramifications of one of their most profitable businesses.

Opening Night: March 21
The Flash star Grant Gustin leads the musical adaptation of Sara Gruen's 2006 novel, which follows a young man and his unconventional found family — a traveling circus. Isabelle McCalla, Gregg Edelman, Paul Alexander Nolan, Stan Brown, Joe De Paul, Sara Gettelfinger and Wade McCollum round out the rest of the main cast. With a book by Tony Award nominee Rick Elice, the show is directed by Tony nominee Jessica Stone.

Opening Night: March 12
Rob Madge stars in this autobiographical solo show directed by Luke Sheppard, which follows Madge's own journey of self-discovery and celebrating their individuality. 

Where: Nederlander Theatre
Opening Night: March 28
Tony Award-winning creators Pete Townshend and Des McAnuff are bringing this Tony-winning rock-opera experience back to Broadway 30 years after its original Main Stem run. Starring Ali Louis Bourzgui, Alison Luff, Adam Jacobs, John Ambrosino, Bobby Conte and Christina Sajous, the musical puts the Who's original 1969 concept album on stage to tell the story of troubled pinball wizard Tommy Walker.

Opening Night: April 11
Based on the cult classic S.E. Hinton novel and Francis Ford Coppola film of the same name, this new musical stars Brody Grant, Sky Lakota-Lynch, Joshua Boone, Brent Comer, Jason Schmidt, Emma Pittman, Daryl Tofa and Kevin William Paul. From a producing team that includes Angelina Jolie, writers Adam Rapp, Justin Levine and Jamestown Revival, and director Danya Taymor, this treasured tale of teen misfits takes to the stage.

Opening Night: April 14
Tony winner Rachel Chavkin directs this one-woman biomusical starring Eden Espinosa, who plays trailblazing artist Tamara de Lempicka as she bucks the system and breaks artistic and cultural molds.

Where: Music Box Theatre
Opening Night: April 18
Following a successful run at Off-Broadway's Public Theater, the American suffragist movement takes center stage in this musical by Shaina Taub. Direction is by Leigh Silverman, and the producing team includes former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai

Opening Night: April 20
This is the aptly-named original musical by Alicia Keys and Kristoffer Diaz, straight from its successful run at Off-Broadway's Public Theater. Director Michael Greif helms this coming-of-age story inspired by Keys' own upbringing in New York City, scored by new and existing music from the Grammy winner.

Where: James Earl Jones Theatre
Opening Night: April 22
Featuring the greatest hits from Huey Lewis and the News, this new musical comedy is directed by Gordon Greenberg with a book and story by Jonathan A. Abrams and Tyler Mitchell. 

Where: Marquis Theatre
Opening Night: April 17
Wayne Brady is The Wiz himself in the latest revival of this Tony-winning Best Musical, which also stars Nichelle Lewis, Deborah Cox, Melody A. Betts, Kyle Ramar Freeman, Phillip Johnson Richardson and Avery Wilson. With a book by William F. Brown and a Tony Award-winning score by Charlie Smalls, The Wiz first opened on Broadway in 1975, when it received seven Tony Awards. In 1978, this celebratory Black adaptation of The Wizard of Oz hit the silver screen starring Diana Ross as Dorothy alongside Michael Jackson's Scarecrow.

Opening Night: April 21
Following a critically acclaimed run on London's West End, the August Wilson Theatre will become the Kit Kat Club for a cast led by Tony- and Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne. Gayle Rankin, Bebe Neuwirth, Ato Blankson-Wood, Steven Skybell, Natascia Diaz, Henry Gottfried also star in this story of love and joy in the face of the emergence of the Nazi party. Rebecca Frecknall directs the classic from John Kander, Fred Ebb and Joe Masteroff.

Opening Night: April 23
Anne Kauffman directs Oscar nominee Rachel McAdams in Amy Herzog's play about a single mother who depends on tireless hopefulness, positivity, selflessness and friendship to persevere through her many obstacles at home. 

Where: Vivian Beaumont Theater
Opening Night: April 24
Heidi Schreck's modern translation of Anton Chekhov's classic play stars Steve Carell in his Broadway debut, William Jackson Harper, Jayne Houdyshell, Mia Katigbak, Alfred Molina, Alison Pill and Anika Noni Rose. With direction by Lila Neugebauer, this updated iteration sees the remote lives of Uncle Vanya and his niece turned upside down when more family members move into their home.

Where: Hayes Theater
Opening Night: April 25
Oscar and Tony winner Jessica Lange, Emmy winner Jim Parsons and Tony winner Celia Keenan-Bolger return to Broadway to play a dysfunctional family in Pulitzer Prize winner Paula Vogel's play alongside director Tina Landau.

This corn-centric musical comedy featuring a book by Robert Horn, a score by the Grammy Award-winning songwriting team of Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally, and direction by Tony Award winner Jack O'Brien, ends its run at Broadway's Nederlander Theatre on Jan. 14. The production rounded up a total of nine Tony Award nominations, and it earned star Alex Newell a historic win in the best featured actor category.

Broadway's adored musical comedy team Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells revisit their musical comedy roots as Bud and Doug, a pair of playwrights attempting to find a spotlight for their original show about the invention of the printing press. Gutenberg! audiences have been surprised toward the end of the show as different celebrities made cameo appearances in the role of a Broadway producer. The roster of past guests includes Kristen Bell, Billy Crystal, John Stamos, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Steve Martin and Martin Short, to name a few. Final bows take place on Jan. 28 at the James Earl Jones Theatre.

With direction by Tony winner Kenny Leon, Tony winner Leslie Odom Jr. stars in the first Broadway revival of playwright Ossie Davis' 1961 production as a charismatic preacher on a mission. The cast, which also includes Kara Young, Billy Eugene Jones, Jay O. Sanders, Heather Alicia Simms, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Noah Robbins, Noah Pyzik and Bill Timoney, takes their final bows Feb. 4 at the Music Box Theatre.

This Tony-winning Best Musical plays its final performance April 28 at the Booth Theatre. The heartfelt story about a teenage girl with a fatal genetic disorder trying to make the most of the time she has boasts a Tony-winning book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire and score by Jeanine Tesori. Stars Victoria Clark and Bonnie Milligan also took home Tonys for their respective performances.
