Shakira will make her first MTV Video Music Awards performance in 17 years on Sept. 12 and she has good reason to turn up for the event.

The Colombian singer will be honored with the Video Vanguard Award, making her the first South American artist and only the second Latina to receive the honor. Jennifer Lopez got the award five years ago.

MTV has turned the spotlight on women for the award in recent years, with Nicki Minaj receiving it in 2022, Missy Elliott was the 2019 recipient, and Pink and Rihanna picked up the award in 2017 and 2016, respectively. Kanye West was the last male winner in 2015.

There’s no word on what the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer will perform on the show, but don’t be surprised if she does “TQG,” her 2023 hit collaboration with Karol G, that was a top 10 hit in March. Karol G has also been announced as a performer on the show.

Shakira had a another top 10 collaboration in January when she teamed up with Bizarrap on “Bzrp Music Session, Vol. 53.” Shakira was named Billboard’s Latin Woman of the Year in April.

“Shakira is a true global force who continues to inspire and influence the masses with her unique, musical prowess,” Bruce Gillmer, president of music, music talent, programming and events, Paramount and chief content officer, Music, Paramount+, said in a statement. “She’s a trailblazer for women around the world and one of the first artists to lead the globalization of Latin music. Her massive impact across the musical landscape will be long-lasting as she continues to create and entertain at the highest level.”
