Angelina Jolie has entered her opera era.
The actress is set to play beloved singer Maria Callas in the upcoming biopic Maria, with the first images from the film released on Monday. Jolie portrays Callis at the end of her life while the performer was living in Paris in the 1970s.
Maria, which signed a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement to shoot during the actors' strike, will be filmed over eight weeks, per The Hollywood Reporter. Locations will include Paris, Greece and Budapest.
Written by Peaky Blinders scribe Steven Knight and directed by Pablo Larraín, the film co-stars Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher and Kodi Smit-McPhee.
"Having the chance to combine my two most deep and personal passions, cinema and opera, has been a long-awaited dream," Larrain said in an Oct. 2022 statement, as reported by IndieWire. "To do this with Angelina, a supremely brave and curious artist, is a fascinating opportunity. A true gift."
