‘Schitt’s Creek’ Star Emily Hampshire Apologizes for ‘Thoughtless’ Johnny Depp, Amber Heard Costume

Hampshire's costume comes after Heard filed for divorce from Depp in May 2016, both since claiming to have endured abuse from the other

Emily Hampshire is regretting her choice to dress as Johnny Depp for Halloween this year.

The Schitt's Creek star apologized for the "thoughtless, insensitive and ignorant" costume choice after she and a friend went as Depp and ex-wife Amber Heard following the pair's contentious legal battle and claims of abuse.

"I want to address what is one of the most thoughtless, insensitive and ignorant things I've ever done. For Halloween, I stupidly thought it would be funny to dress as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard," she wrote in a statement on Instagram.

"I am deeply sorry and ashamed for putting something that awful out in the universe. Domestic abuse is never, ever funny. These are real issues with real people and I REALLY regret my actions," concluded Hampshire. "In the future, I will do better. I'm so sorry."

Heard filed for divorce from Depp in May 2016 after a year of marriage, securing a restraining order as she claimed she endured physical and emotional abuse from him throughout the relationship.

Depp has since alleged that Heard was "not a victim of domestic abuse," but a "perpetrator."

Last year, a Virginia jury found that Heard defamed Depp in a Washington Post op-ed, initially awarding him $15 million. Heard was awarded $2 million in a defamation countersuit, but both appealed the verdict.

Although Heard ultimately settled and paid her ex $1 million, she said it was "not an act of concession" in a statement at the time.
