Robert De Niro on Parenting New Baby With Girlfriend Tiffany Chen

When it comes to Robert De Niro's seventh child, the actor confessed he's not 100 percent hands on. De Niro, 80, and his partner Tiffany Chen welcomed daughter Gia Virginia Chen-De Niro, on April 6. She is the couple's first child together.

"It’s going OK," he told The Guardian of being a father again in an interview published on Sunday.

The outlet noted that De Niro has previously said of fatherhood: "It’s always good and mysterious and you don’t know what the hell is going to happen."

As for whether he still agrees, the Oscar winner said, "You never know."

Asked if he believes the phrase is still true, he quipped, "Of course it’s true! It’s true for everybody," adding: "You never know what’s going to happen. They surprise you."

"It doesn’t get easier,” he continued before admitting that Chen, who was diagnosed with Bell's Palsy after giving birth, does most of the "heavy lifting."

"It is what it is. It’s OK. I mean, I don’t do the heavy lifting. I’m there, I support my girlfriend. But she does the work. And we have help, which is so important," said the About My Father actor.

De Niro couldn't pick what he loves most about fatherhood and said, "All of it! With a baby it’s different to with my 11-year-old. My adult children. My grandchildren. It’s all different."

He is also father to daughter Drena, 52, and son Raphael, 46, whom he shares with his first wife Diahnne Abbott, as well as 27-year-old twin sons Aaron and Julian with ex-girlfriend Toukie Smith. De Niro and his ex-wife Grace Hightower are also parents to son Elliot, 25, and daughter Helen Grace, 11.

Speaking to The Guardian, De Niro opened up about the large age gap among his children.

"Well, I don’t talk to the adult children the way I talk to my baby, or the way I speak to my 11-year-old, though she’s pretty smart. But… I don’t know if you have kids."

De Niro will next be seen in the anticipated Martin Scorsese-helmed film Killers of the Flower Moon out October 20.
