Rhea Perlman Reveals She and Danny DeVito Are Officially Grandparents

'It just happened seven weeks ago,' the actress said of welcoming her first grandchild

Rhea Perlman and Danny DeVito are first-time grandparents.

“Two months ago, my daughter Gracie, gave birth to a beautiful, healthy baby girl," the actress tells The Messenger in a statement via her representative. "A brand new human being was brought into the world and into our lives. To watch this tiny new person squiggle and squirm and at times focus and react, is pure 100% joy. I've won the greatest prize on earth."

She adds, "There's nothing I can say about becoming a grandmother that isn't 100% corny. And that's okay with me! I'm filled with gratitude, love, and joy!"

Perlman first announced the news while on a recent episode of the Wiser Than Me with Julia Louis-Dreyfus podcast from Lemonada Media.

During her appearance, Perlman shared with her You People co-star her favorite thing about being 75.

"The best part is that my children haven grown and one of them had a grandchild. And that didn't happen before I was 75."

Perlman, who shares three adult children — daughters Lucille and Grace as well as son Jacob — with her estranged husband Danny DeVito, added, "It just happened seven weeks ago. It's amazing, it's amazing. I mean everybody said it'll change your life when you have a grandchild and it does."

She explained, "There's a certain love. I mean, I felt it when my own children were born. It's a kind of love I had never felt before from anything, and I felt love for my husband, other people in my family, a boyfriend here and there, whatever. But this is ... it was a profound kind of feeling."

"And there it is again," continued the proud grandmother. "It's just, they can do no wrong. It's like looking at a new human being. It's so amazing that people create other people. It's just mind-boggling."

Though she did not share which child welcomed a baby at the time, her granddaughter's name pays homage to one of her children.

"Sinclair Lucille DeVito," Perlman shared. "They kept the name DeVito, even though she's married and her husband's name is not DeVito. But that's what they chose."

As for quality time, Perlman said she's "spending considerable amounts of time. I'm trying to not get in their face every day but we live pretty close together. I live in the East Side of L.A. and so do they. It's an easy 10-minute drive."

Perlman added that her new moniker is Grandma RiRi, or "just RiRi."

She went on to give parenting advice: "Be there for them, for any situation that they need you for. Be there for them when you want to be, but don't overwhelm them. There's no room for impatience. I mean, you have to have impatience, sometimes you're going to be impatient."

She also shared that the new parents have a night nurse "which is a good thing. I wish I had had one."
