‘Oppenheimer’ Set to Surpass ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ as Highest-Grossing Biopic Ever

It's a great weekend for actor Rami Malek, who boasts starring roles in both of the box-office behemoths

Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer is poised for its latest major milestone. Having passed the $900 million mark worldwide per estimated totals as of Friday and expected to hit $912M by the close of the weekend, the film is now the highest-grossing biopic ever at the global box office.

This latest feat puts the film ahead of previous record holder Bohemian Rhapsody, which grossed $910.8 million internationally.

The two films notably share talent from actor Rami Malek, who portrayed Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in the 2018 biopic, and nuclear physicist David L. Hill in Nolan's project.

Although Malek's role in Bohemian Rhapsody was unquestionably meatier in terms of screen time (as well as won him an Academy Award for best actor in 2019), he received considerable critical acclaim for his handling of Hill, a subtly developed role which stunned viewers with a scene-stealing monologue near the end of the film.

Oppenheimer, which stars Cillian Murphy as the titular physicist — as well as Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Josh Hartnett and a slew of other A-list actors — has nailed down a series of records since its July release, including becoming the most successful World War II-set movie of all time after firing past $500 million at the global box office last month.
