‘You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment’ Is Out Now on Netflix and Viewers Are Calling It ‘Eye-Opening’

"You are what you eat" may be the oldest parenting slogan in the book — but now Netflix is putting it to the test. You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment debuted on the streaming service Sunday, following four sets of twins — Pam and Wendy, Charlie and Michael, Carolyn and Rosalyn, and Jevon and John — who participate in a Stanford experiment designed to find out the real nutritional effects of the meat and dairy-heavy Standard American Diet (given the ironic acronym "SAD"). The series also investigates what labels for food really mean (for example, "free-range") and how plant-based diets could help solve the current climate crisis.

Led by nutrition researcher Christopher Gardner, one twin will eat a typical omnivore diet for eight weeks, while the other will take on a vegan lifestyle. At the end of the experiment, the researchers will compare common indicators of health — like blood pressure, weight and body composition — to shed light on the diets' effects. The experiment uses identical twins to eliminate the varying consequences that genetics can pose.

As a result, the plant-based twin, on average, experienced a "10% to 15% drop in LDL cholesterol, a 25% drop in insulin, and a 3% drop in body weight in just eight weeks, all by eating real food without animal products," Gardner said, according to CNN Health.

While the series has only been out for one day, viewers are already calling the show "eye-opening" and "10/10."

"If you never want to eat meat and seafood again," one fan wrote, "Go watch You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment on Netflix."

But, not everyone is a fan of the show. One viewer pointed out that plant-based diets aren't accessible for everyone, while another accused the series of "pushing" a vegan lifestyle due to the effects of climate change.

All four episodes of You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment are now available to stream on Netflix. You can watch the trailer below.
