Native American Leaders Hope Taylor Swift Can Help Get Tomahawk Chop Banned From Chiefs Games
The organization called on the 'Anti-Hero' singer with hopes that the fan hand gesture will not be allowed at future Chiefs games
A coalition of Native American leaders are hoping that Taylor Swift can assist them in getting the tomahawk chop, a hand gesture done during Chiefs games, banned.
The organization called on the "Anti-Hero" singer to be an ally to them as they continue to speak out with hopes that the gesture will not be allowed at future Chiefs games.
"We remain hopeful that an outside influence like Ms. Swift could be an ally for us in moving the conversation forward on why the chop is a racist act," said Not In Our Honor, a Kansas City coalition of Native American leaders and American Indian organizations.
The tomahawk chop, sometimes referred to as the Arrowhead chop, is "a rhythmic forearm motion that Chiefs fans do to the beat of a 'war chant.'"
"To us, that hand gesture is synchronized racism," the organization said in a statement.
Last week, Swift attended the Chiefs game at Arrowhead Stadium to watch her rumored boyfriend, Travis Kelce, play. The group was protesting outside of the stadium that day, calling out the football team for the misappropriation of their culture, according to USA Today.

Swift has not commented on the matter, but she did not participate in the chant while others around her took part in it during the game.
The Chiefs have previously banned fake headdresses and Native American-themed war paint from their games after a group of local Native people advised them to.
