Millennials Are Being Dragged by the 'Mean Girls' Reboot Trailer - The Messenger
It's time to break the news. The Messenger's slogan

The trailer for the Mean Girls movie has just dropped, and older fans are already peeved by the framing of the reboot.

The film is an adaptation of the Broadway musical Mean Girls, which premiered in 2017 and was adapted from the 2004 film starring Lindsey Lohan. The former features stars new and old, including Jenna Fischer, Avantika, Tina Fey, Tim Meadows, and Reneé Rapp.

Though the original film is less than 20 years old, the new tagline reads, "This isn't your mother's Mean Girls" — implying the formerly teenage followers of the franchise have gotten, well, old. In fact, they should now be well established with teenagers of their own. Right?

"'Not your mother's Mean Girls' is such a specific burn since those of us who grew up with the OG are old enough to have teenagers," one Twitter user said. "Excuse me. I need to go fling myself off a cliff."

Several users clapped back at the trailer for calling them ancient...

...while others were more concerned that the trailer does little to remind folks that the film is a musical:

Mean Girls hits theaters on Jan. 12, 2024.
