Meghan McCain Unbothered by Social Media Trolls, Except for Doctored ‘Photos of My Dad and Me at His Coffin’ (Exclusive)
While the former 'View' host said she's 'tough' now, she still struggles with seeing doctored photos of herself crying at father John McCain's funeral in 2018
While Meghan McCain has developed tough skin throughout the years, social media can still get to her at times.
In an exclusive interview with The Messenger to promote her new Citizen Cain Productions banner and her Meghan McCain Has Entered the Chat podcast, the TV personality opened up about how she's been affected by social media trolls in the past and how she's been able to move on from the negativity.
"I am so tough now," the former host of The View said. "And partly it's because I'm so much older. I'm turning 39 in few weeks, and I have two young kids, and I'm married, and I'm in such a different place in my life than I used to be. I really, really try and let things roll off me.
"I will say the one thing that really does hurt me is people doctor photos of my dad and me at his coffin all the time and send it to me often — like [a] picture of me eating his brains, and the Libertarian Party actually has a 'Happy John McCain's Death Day.' They were tweeting out pictures of me at my dad's coffin crying. So those are the things that I have a very hard time with."
Late Senator John McCain died on Aug. 25, 2018, after being diagnosed with brain cancer. According to the Arizona Republic, a photo of Meghan crying over her father's casket at the Arizona State Capitol had been doctored to include a gun pointed at the mother of two, per People. The outlet reported that along with the image, the X (formerly Twitter) user wrote, "America this one's for you."
X eventually suspended the account in question after Meghan's husband, Ben Domenech, urged the social media platform's CEO to take the photo down.
"No one should have to raise a ruckus or highlight this sort of thing publicly to get their attention," he said, before explaining that he was removing his first tweet with the photo "so no one has to see it."

"Still want an explanation for why something so obviously in violation took so much attention for Twitter to react," Domenech wrote at the time.
Meghan also opened up about her father's legacy and how she's managed to find peace since his death.
"Every single thing I do, I think about him," Meghan said about her dad. "But I think that five years out, I'm in a much happier place with his memories than obviously I was when he first died and in the first few years after. His personality and legacy, and my love for him, directly impacts every single thing I do."
Meghan said that while her father was struggling with cancer, he "maintained his sense of humor" — a lesson she's incorporated into her life now.
"He maintained his sense of humor in even the darkest of times," she said. "When President Trump was elected president, I was really scared and freaked out, and I called him the morning that it was announced. I remember I didn't get that much sleep, but I called him, and I said, 'What are we going to do?' And he said, 'I want you to get up. And I want you to go to the window right now.' And he goes, 'Do you see all those f---ing pigs flying around?'
"I always think even in dark times, he was always making jokes, and as simple as that sounds, maintaining a sense of humor throughout everything is really important," she added. "He always said, 'As long as you do what you know is right, you'll never go wrong.'"
