Mean Girls Day: Why Millennials Love October 3 - The Messenger
It's time to break the news. The Messenger's slogan

October isn’t just known for Oktoberfest and Halloween the beginning of the month also marks another holiday, Mean Girls Day.

Coined after the iconic line exchange of “What day is it?” “It’s October 3rd.” in the movie Mean Girls, the national holiday was born in 2004 after the comedy’s release.

Written by Tiny Fey, starring Lindsay Lohan as the lead role Cady, the film is still quoted 19 years later — mainly by millennials — and is celebrated annually.

While the exchange itself lasts about five seconds, social media users repost the scene each year on Oct. 3 to commemorate the start of Cady and Aaron's story.

Mean Girls was seen as a classic because critics believed it went beyond the basic chic flic narrative. It not only had quotable one-liners but had several other character development stories outside of the protagonist Cady, including the villain, Reinga George.

“Raise your hand if you have ever been personally victimized by Regina George.”

George was not only depicted as the pretty stereotypical high school mean girl, but we also got an insight into her and her life. Aside from that the movie diving into the lives of some teachers and other side students also added some twists and turns not often found in other chick flicks.

Not to mention the Mean Girls rendition of the well-known Christmas song "Jingle Bell Rock" by Bobby Helms.

Mean Girls has something for everyone and never seems to get old. It even has some of us wondering where some of the stars who didn't follow the traditional Hollywood route, including infamous mathletes champion Kevin G, ended up after the film.

Played by Rajiv Surendra, Kevin G was "the Indian guy" who constantly hit on Janis, Cady's friend, and surprised everyone with a rap at the school's talent show.

But where is Surendra now? Surendra made headlines for years after the film with people wondering where Kevin was and what he was doing post-film. While Surendra continued acting for some years, he now is known for DIY craft-related videos.

The 34-year-old's Instagram page depicts the range of skills he has, including painting, pottery, calligraphy, and playing the harp.

Other stars from the film including Lizzy Caplan (Janis) and Amy Poehler (June George) are widely known and a surprise for some to connect the dots to Mean Girls.

The reality is if you grew up in the 1990s or early 2000s whether or not you watched the film, there's a high chance you have heard one of the following Mean Girls quotes... and if you haven't here is some millennial culture for you to learn.

  • "She doesn’t even go here!"
  • "She's a life-ruiner. She ruins people's lives"
  • "Four for you Glen Coco. You go, Glen Coco."
  • "That’s why her hair is so big; it’s full of secrets."
  • "You can’t just ask someone why they’re white."
  • "Boo, you wh*re!"
  • "Don’t have sex, because you will get pregnant and die."
  • "Stop trying to make fetch happen! It’s not going to happen."
  • "I'm sorry that people are so jealous of me. But I can't help it that I'm popular."
  • "I can't go to Taco Bell! I'm on an all-carb diet!"
  • "I'm kind of psychic. I have a fifth sense."
  • "It's like I have ESPN or something."
  • "Somebody should just stab Caesar."
  • "I wish I could bake a cake filled with rainbows and smiles and everyone would eat and be happy."
  • "On Wednesdays we were pink."
  • "You can't sit with us."

Too bad Mean Girls Day is just a day shy of Wednesday in 2023. Here's to celebrating it one more year.
