Maury Povich Proposes Primetime DNA Special to Determine Link Between Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson

After McConaughey suggested that he and Harrelson might be related, Povich volunteered to come out of retirement to help sort things out

"Matthew McConaughey, you are Woody Harrelson's half-brother!"

After McConaughey suggested that he and good friend Harrelson might actually be related, daytime television's foremost authority on DNA testing has offered his services.

"I just heard about the possibilities," Maury Povich said in a message to McConaughey on E! News. "Matthew, I don't know you. Woody, you're my pal. But guess what? I would come out of retirement. We could do primetime DNA. Maury's back with Woody and Matthew!"

Povich retired from his talk show Maury last year after 31 seasons. Over the course of its run, paternity test revelations became the most infamous part of the show – even resulting in Povich rolling out his own line of at-home paternity tests earlier this year.

"I'll even get my showtime color back in my hair!" Povich continued in the video while taking off his hat to reveal his white hair. "Woody's got my number. I'm ready!"

While Povich may have been raring to go, McConaughey wasn't as sure about the whole idea.

"I don't know if we're going to be calling you to do that on your show," he said after watching Povich's plea. "But I like the way you're thinking."

As for the rumor about the True Detective stars' bloodlines, it all started because of McConaughey's mother Mary.

"My family thinks a lot of pictures of him are me, his family thinks a lot of pictures of me are him," the actor told Kelly Ripa on her Let's Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa podcast earlier this year. "In Greece a few years ago, we're sitting around talking about how close we are and our families and et cetera and my mom is there. And she says, 'Woody, I knew your dad.'"

McConaughey then explained that there's a chance Harrelson's father met Mary during a time when she and her husband James were divorced (Mary and James were divorced twice and married three times).

"There's possible receipts placing them out in West Texas," he shared, "where there might have been a gathering or a meeting."

However, McConaughey did acknowledge that a potential paternity test bombshell would rock the entire foundation of his life.

"It's a little easier for Wood to say, 'Come on, let's do it,' because what's the skin in it for him?" he said. "It's a little harder for me because he's asking me to take the chance to go, 'Wait a minute, you're telling me my dad may not be my dad of 53 years,' and believe in it? I got a little more skin in the game."

Harrelson and McConaughey will next be seen in an upcoming Apple TV+ comedy where their families live together on a Texas ranch.
