Watch Matthew McConaughey Sing His New Children’s Book ‘Just Because’
The actor-turned-writer was 'alright, alright, alright' with turning his words into a song on the spot
On Monday night's episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Matthew McConaughey appeared in support of his new children's book Just Because, which he wrote after experiencing a dream that he couldn't shake, but which he could shake it to.
"This came to me in a little ditty of a dream one night, and I woke up at 2:30 with this little hook," McConaughey told host Jimmy Fallon. "I woke up, and it was a good dream, and as you do with good dreams when you don't want them to end, you try to keep the rhythm of the thought."
McConaughey, who previously released his autobiography Greenlights in 2020, explained that he decided to get up and write to the music of his mind in that wee-hours moment and came up with dozens upon dozens of lines for his kid-centric story.
"I wrote about 200 couplets, 30 of which made it into this version," he said, adding that "because this is a younger-person version," some of his lines had to be saved for later. Upon writing out the many lines, he recognized that some of the challenges covered in his verses were things his own three children were going through and felt he had something worth publishing.
Considering the book was originally based on the melody in McConaughey's mind, Fallon had no choice but to ask his band to strike up a "tasty" beat for them to belt to.
What resulted is an adorable sing-along moment that fans of any age can enjoy.
