Martin Short and Meryl Streep Are ‘Very Good Friends, Nothing More’ Amid Romance Rumors: Rep (Exclusive)

Since Meryl Streep announced her separation in October, there have been social media rumors about her dating Martin Short. Both appear on the hit Hulu series Only Murders in the Building. The only problem – it’s not true.

“They are just very good friends, nothing more,” a rep for Short confirmed to The Messenger.

The speculation had been spreading for weeks and even inspired a Reddit thread back in early December as well as posts on X, formerly Twitter.

“There are two quite surprising celebrity couples I’ve been hearing about for weeks and I can’t believe the news hasn’t broken about either of them yet,” Time Out New York theater editor and critic Adam Feldman posted on X, back in early December. “I heard a rumor that Meryl Streep and Martin Short are dating 🤯,” The Amateur Gourmet writer Adam Roberts responded with a repost.

The rumors heated up Sunday night when Streep and Short were seated next to each other at the Golden Globes, where both were nominated for their roles on Only Murders in the Building.  “Are Meryl Streep and Martin Short dating… because if that’s true… that’s like Gene Wilder and Gilda Radner multiplied by Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft…,” wrote Louis Virtel of Crooked Media and Jimmy Kimmel Live.

A Streep stan responded to that post with what they thought was video and photographic evidence along with the caption, “The way they look at each other.”

Although fans may be disappointed that the romance between the two beloved actors isn’t happening in real-life, you can see the romance between their characters – Short’s Oliver and Streep’s Loretta – in season 3 of the show.
