Kristin Cavallari Explains Why She Cut Her ‘Narcissist’ Dad Out of Her Life 2 Years Ago

'All I knew growing up was that I didn't want to be around [my dad] ... he always made me feel like I wasn't good enough,' the 'Hills' alum said on her podcast 'Let's Be Honest'

Kristin Cavallari has set her boundaries when it comes to her relationship with her dad.

During Tuesday's episode of her podcast, Let's Be Honest, the Uncommon James founder and TV personality opened up about why she cut her "narcissist" father out of her life a couple years ago.

"I cut my dad out of my life about two years ago, which has honestly been the best thing I've ever done," Cavallari told her guest, Dr. Sherrie Campbell. "I actually didn't even realize that my dad was a narcissist until I was an adult. All I knew growing up was that I didn't want to be around him. He always made me feel like I wasn't good enough."

"But then the flip side of that is, sometimes he would put me on this pedestal and talk me up. Now as an adult looking back, it was when it benefitted you and made you look good," she added. "How I got my dad out of my life was something happened with my kids (daughter Saylor, 8, sons Camden, 11, and Jaxon, 9, whom she shares with ex-husband Jay Cutler) and it crossed the line. And I was like, 'You know what? I'm f---ing done.' And he blamed me for it, like threw everything back in my face."

"I was always like, I can take it," she concluded. "You know. I can take the abuse. I have my whole life. But it's like when you start now messing with my kids, I'm not doing it."

After the podcast was released, Cavallari took to Instagram to thank her followers for all their support.

"The response to today's episode is overwhelming in the best way possible," she said in a video posted on her Instagram Story. "You guys are feeling how I felt when I first heard Dr. Sherri. You feel so seen and validated and it's such an important feeling."

"If anyone has experienced narcissistic abuse, it's like you can't even describe it," she added. "And if you haven't experienced it, you do not understand. It is so deep and it is a really crazy journey to heal through it. Your DMs are so incredible ... it's making my entire world, so thank you."

In June, the Hills alum exclusively spoke to The Messenger about not wanting to make her kids feel spoiled and teaching them the importance of hard work, saying that it is "really important" that her kids "do not just get whatever they want."

"My mom never gave me anything, and it drove me crazy, but my dad would have given me everything," she said, speaking candidly on her home life. "I didn't live with my dad for middle school and those years. So I was really thankful that my mom didn't give me anything, because it made me realize if I want to get something, I gotta make it happen myself. I've just always been someone who's more proud to get things done myself and make my own money. I've always been like that."
