Kelly Clarkson is starting the New Year more confident than ever before.

The Kelly Clarkson Show host recently opened up about her weight loss, sharing her routine and the simple thing she did to kickstart her health journey: taking her doctor's advice.

"I eat a healthy mix. I dropped weight because I've been listening to my doctor — a couple years I didn't," the former American Idol winner told People for this week's cover story. "And 90 percent of the time I'm really good at it because a protein diet is good for me anyway. I'm a Texas girl, so I like meat — sorry, vegetarians in the world!"

Of how she gets her exercise in, Clarkson added, "Walking in the city is quite the workout. And I'm really into infrared saunas right now. And I just got a cold plunge because everybody wore me down."

The three-time Grammy Award winner went on to tell the publication that moving her daytime talk show from Los Angeles to New York for its fifth season was a beneficial decision not only for her two kids, but for her overall wellbeing. She shares daughter River Rose, 9, and Remington Alexander, 7, with ex-husband Brandon Blackstock.

"I was very unhappy in L.A. and had been for several years. I needed a fresh start," she explained. "We told NBC, 'I'm not trying to sound ungrateful, I just can't stay here anymore for my mental health; for me and my kids.' They weren't doing well either. For the past few years, I'd just been showing up and smiling and doing what I'm supposed to do, but you can only compartmentalize so long until you break."

Of her and her kids' new routine, Clarkson said, "We go walk the dogs a few times at the park. We'll go for ice cream because my daughter will wear me down. We'll go make slime and we go to the museum."

The Texas native previously told USA Today about her big move in October last year after finalizing her contentious divorce with Blackstock in February.

"At this point, I'm 40 years old. Mama rented something nice!" Clarkson said of her new home that's blocks away from her talk show's new studio in 30 Rockefeller Plaza. "I was like, 'I'm not living here unless it's right by the park and really nice for the kids.'"
