How Katharine McPhee Makes Sure Her 2-Year-Old Son With David Foster Isn’t a Budding ‘A-Hole’
'We don't put up with any BS,' said McPhee of her and Foster's 2-year-old son Rennie
Katharine McPhee is determined her toddler son will not to grow up to be an "a-hole," so she and husband David Foster are setting boundaries for him now.
"We don't put up with any BS," the singer told Us Weekly Monday of her and Foster's son Rennie, whom they welcomed in February 2021.
She explained, "We don't want him to be an A-hole. He [needs] to be nice, polite, obedient, have his own voice and all that, but just [be] a good kid."
McPhee shared that although she and Foster, who wed in 2019, are "really strong" when it comes to setting boundaries for their child, they "just have different ways of approaching the boundaries."
"I would say I'm more of that newer generation of gentle parenting and explaining and having a bit more patience in just a new way than what I think the older generation was taught how to parent," said McPhee, admitting that she often has trouble embracing Foster's methods.
"When I have a different approach, [I] try to get him to be more like my approach without wanting to take away from how he wants to parent."

Opening up about the realities of parenting, even in seemingly small tasks, she continued, "It's so funny. Literally changing a fricking 2-year-old is the hardest thing. First of all, he's so strong and it's hard. It's like an aerobics class. … I mean, he's never liked having his clothes changed or whatever. So sometimes it turns into a game, sometimes it turns into a struggle, but honestly, just who knew changing clothes would be so difficult."
In August, McPhee abruptly departed the Asia leg of Foster's tour, citing a family emergency. It was later reported that their nanny died after allegedly being hit by an 84-year-old woman driving a RAV4 at a Toyota dealership in San Fernando Valley, Calif.
"It's been tough for her," Foster told Entertainment Tonight last month of his wife as the couple spoke out publicly for the first time about their nanny's death. "Yeah, it's been tough. She's managing."
