Joy Behar Claims She Turned Down Playing Ted Lasso’s Mom All Because of Mother Nature
Becky Ann Baker received an Emmy nomination for her role of Dottie Lasso in Season 3 of the Jason Sudeikis Apple TV+ comedy
Joy Behar says she nearly added another television role to her list of credits, but Mother Nature had other plans.
On Wednesday's episode of The View's Behind the Table podcast, Behar claimed she was in the mix to play the mother of Jason Sudeikis' titular Ted Lasso on the beloved Apple TV+ comedy
However, other forces stepped in to dissuade Behar from making the trip to London, where the show was filmed.
"It was too hot," Behar told host and The View executive producer Brian Teta. "Do you remember there was a heatwave going on at that time? Like 100-degree weather."
Ted's mother Dottie appeared in Season 3, which was released in March 2023 and filmed the year prior, when the region recorded their highest number of heat-related deaths in history.
"Listen, I’m a writer," Behar also explained. "I write my own stuff. I don’t care about other people’s stuff. I don’t need to be in everything."
Still, Teta was dismayed that Behar turned down the chance at Ted Lasso, which he called "the hottest show on TV, the coolest show on television."

The role of Dottie Lasso eventually went to Becky Ann Baker, who was nominated for an Emmy for her portrayal on the show's third and final season. When made aware of that fact, Behar said, "Well, good for her."
