Josh Gad Reveals He Thought ‘Book of Mormon’ and ‘Frozen’ Would ‘Bomb’
'I thought it was going to close within three weeks,' Josh Gad said of 'Book of Mormon' during a joint appearance with 'Gutenberg!' co-star Andrew Rannells on 'The Kelly Clarkson Show'
Josh Gad is the first to admit he is not the best gauge on whether or not his movies and shows will be a hit with audiences. His blockbuster blindspots include some of the biggest hits on his resume.
The actor made the revelation during a joint appearance with his best friend and Book of Mormon co-star Andrew Rannells on Friday's episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show. Host Kelly Clarkson chatted with the duo about their longtime friendship and the importance of having close friends in the industry who can relate to the ins and outs of being in the spotlight.
"It is a hard industry – I think everybody always thinks we're all barbecuing together all the time but it's…I don't have a lot of friends," Clarkson began. "So wait, do you have those times … it seems like the kind of friendship where you can connect and you're like, 'Man, this is hard.' Like, when you're being serious."
After Rannells replied, "Doing The Book of Mormon together, obviously, we could not have predicted that show would've been as successful as it was," Clarkson was noticeably in disbelief over the claim.
Gad added, "I thought it was going to close within three weeks."
"You have no pulse on the people," Clarkson joked, to which the Beauty and the Beast actor responded, "By the way, I thought Frozen was going to be a bomb, too. What do I know?"

Rannells went on to gush about his friendship with Gad telling the former Voice coach, "We got to go through that whole experience together. We went to the Tony Awards together, we both moved back to Los Angeles together, we both had TV shows together, they both got canceled together. We had to go through all of it. And you know, I could look at Josh and be like, 'Oh you know exactly what I'm going through.' It's very rare."
Gad and Rannells are currently starring together in Broadway's Gutenberg! The Musical, which opened earlier this month and runs through January 28, 2024.
