Ingrid Michaelson Would ‘Love’ to See Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling Attend ‘The Notebook’ on Broadway (Exclusive)
'We've barely had contact with Nicholas Sparks. He's kind of been like, 'I trust you guys. I trust your team. Go do what you want to do,'' the 'Notebook' composer tells The Messenger
Ingrid Michaelson says she would "love" it if The Notebook stars Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling eventually see her stage musical adaptation when it hits Broadway next year.
"That would be really fun," Michaelson — who composed and wrote the music for the Broadway musical — tells The Messenger of potentially having the Barbie star and the Mean Girls actress in the audience.
The musician, whose new single "Feelings" from the Slumberkins album, Together We Shine, Vol 1, dropped in August, goes on to detail how she and her team have had creative freedom over the last couple years to make The Notebook musical into something special.
"We've barely had contact with [author] Nicholas Sparks. He's kind of been like, 'I trust you guys. I trust your team. Go do what you want to do,'" she explains. "We've kind of had free rein to really go for it and make a really interesting, beautiful piece of art of the story."
So how will the Broadway version differ from the 2004 film?
"Well, we're not doing the movie. So a lot of times movie musicals — this is my opinion — I like when a musical diverges somewhat from the movie because if you want to watch the movie, you can go watch the movie," Michaelson notes. "In a musical people are singing it automatically, it's got to be a little different. So we're definitely shifting some things."
She adds, "The story is the same. The characters are the same, but we're definitely playing with it and making it a lot more theatrical and a lot more magical. I don't want to give too much away. But it's really a beautiful, beautiful show. And I really feel like it's kind of just one of the most important things I've done in my career."
