Kimberly J. Brown Had ‘No Romantic Feelings’ for Fiancé Daniel Kountz on ‘Halloweentown’ Set When She Was 16
After the couple announced their engagement last year, Brown and Kountz recounted their 2016 reunion and subsequent love story at 90s Con
Although Halloween will always be a romantic holiday for Kimberly J. Brown and fiancé Daniel Kountz, it wasn't love at first sight.
During this weekend's 90s Con in Tampa, Fla. — which went on in compliance with certain SAG-AFTRA guidelines amid the ongoing union strikes — the stars of the 2001 Disney Channel Original Movie Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge explained that their romance sparked when they reunited in 2016.
"We had a great time working together, but there were no romantic feelings on set or anything," recalled Brown as the couple discussed their lives, relationship and careers during a panel on Sunday.
"And then, fast forward about 15 years or so," she continued. "I was doing some sketches for my YouTube channel, some of my friends from Second City, and I decided to hit him up on social media and say, 'How you doing? Would you like to come do some of the sketches with us?' Because I thought the fans would love it. And then yeah, I just — what do the kids say now? —started catching feelings."
Brown added, "It was nice to have that kind of foundation, but it really was kind of starting in a different lifetime or something."
Kountz explained that "there was a familiarity" between the pair after all those years, adding: "It was like getting to know each other but also kind of knowing each other for a long time."

"But I mean, truth be told I'm six years older than she is. So, when we filmed Halloweentown II, she was 16," he noted. "So I was like, 'Oh, she's so cute. Oh, that's so nice. I'm just gonna stay away.' But you know, when you get to a certain age, you're all adults. It all evens out."
After reuniting to pay tribute to the movie in a 2016 YouTube video, Brown and Kountz announced their engagement last June. The couple continues making funny TikTok videos for their nearly 2 million followers.
During 90s Con, Brown exclusively told The Messenger of planning their big day, "It's like we're putting together a production of our own. We've really enjoyed taking our time and getting to choose the venue and the vendors."
Kountz was a particular fan of the cake tasting, which Brown called out as his favorite part. "Other than marrying her," he added.
Brown starred in 1998's Halloweentown as Marnie Piper, a teenager who discovers she's a witch and gets whisked away through a secret portal to the titular land of witches, ghosts, werewolves and more supernatural creatures. The DCOM also starred Debbie Reynolds as Aggie Cromwell, Marnie's grandmother and fellow witch, as well as Judith Hoag, Joey Zimmerman and Emily Roeske.
Kountz joined the franchise in the 2001 sequel, Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge, playing Kal, whom Marnie has a crush on until she finds out he is actually a warlock with dark plans for the town.
The franchise also included Halloweentown High in 2004 and Return to Halloweentown in 2006, although the role of Marnie was recast with Sara Paxton for the fourth and final film.
Halloweentown is available to stream on Disney+.
