Greta Gerwig Responds to Jo Koy’s Controversial Golden Globes Joke About Barbie’s ‘Big Boobies’

Jo Koy's quip about Barbie may have went down like a lead balloon at Sunday's Golden Globes — but director Greta Gerwig said the host had a point.

During his opening monologue at the ceremony, Koy said that while Oppenheimer was "based on a 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project," Barbie was based on "a plastic doll with big boobies!"

The joke drew some groans from the crowd, but the movie's director couldn't deny the premise was based in truth.

"Well, he's not wrong," Gerwig told BBC Radio 4's Today. "She's the first doll that was mass produced with breasts, so he was right on."

Gerwig continued, "I think that so much of the project of the movie was unlikely because it is about a plastic doll. Barbie by her very construction has no character, no story, she's there to be projected upon."

Koy's kicker about the movie concluded, "The key moment in Barbie is when she goes from perfect beauty to bad breath, cellulite and flat feet. Or what casting directors call character actor!"

After the show, Koy admitted that he had a rough night.

"It's a tough room," the comedian told GMA3: What You Need to Know on Monday. "It was a hard job. I'm not going to lie."

Koy also acknowledged he was aware his hosting duties weren't exactly well-received.

"I'd be lying [if I said] it doesn't hurt," he shared. "I hit a moment there where I was just like, 'Ah.' Hosting is a tough gig. Yes, I am a stand-up comic but that hosting position is a different style, you know?"
