Debra Messing Shares Star of David Photo, Message, and Alternate Take on Ethnic Cleansing

'I choose not to be afraid, but to proclaim -- with this necklace -- that I am a Jew, and I’m not going anywhere,' Debra Messing wrote in an Instagram post

Actress Debra Messing continues to use her Instagram account to speak out about the Israel-Hamas War. On Wednesday, she posted a photo of herself wearing a Star of David and a graphic with an alternate take on ethnic cleansing.

Along with the photo of herself wearing the Star of David necklace, Messing posted a caption explaining its significance to her.

“Thank you @elisabethbelljewelry for this beautiful Magen David,” she wrote. “To be honest, I have never worn one prior to October 7th. Ever since that barbaric, hateful day, I feel a deeper connection to my Judaism than I ever had. As a people, we are proud of our heritage and our resilience. With the explosion of Jew hate violence, I choose not to be afraid, but to proclaim -- with this necklace -- that I am a Jew, and I’m not going anywhere.”

“Thank you, Elizabeth Bell, for donating 30% of all proceeds from the sale of these stars will be donated to Magen David Adom,” she added. The organization Messing refers to is Israel’s official representative to the International Red Cross.

Messing also shared an infographic titled “This Is Ethnic Cleansing.” It lists the Jewish population in 1948 vs. 2023 in several Arab countries along with the Arab Population in 1948 vs. 2023 of Arabs in Israel and Arabs in Gaza. In the case of the former, the population has reportedly dramatically decreased. In the latter case, the population has dramatically increased.

The Messenger hasn’t verified the accuracy of the figures in the graphic.

Messing received some pushback from the post. “Debra, I'm Jewish and have loved the work you're doing. This is too far. Our Palestinian brothers and sisters are in pain right now. You can stand with Israel and still have compassion for the THOUSANDS of people that have been killed over the last two months,” wrote one commenter.
