Shepard's impromptu lap dance at the wedding of singer-songwriter Hannah Anderson, whom he and wife Kristen Bell have known since she was 16, raised some eyebrows

Dax Shepard is opening up about a rather controversial wedding lap dance.

In an Instagram post shared Tuesday, Shepard's wife Kristen Bell celebrated the wedding of their "surrogate" daughter, singer-songwriter Hannah Anderson.

"Some kids you have by birth. Others you find," she wrote. "You see this little seed and can instantly picture the beautiful garden they will become. I was lucky enough to find Hannah. She came into our lives at 16, and even then she was an incredibly bright light. She served as a surrogate big sister to our girls, singing them to sleep on her guitar when they were babies."

In the post, Bell shared photos of herself and Shepard at the Sept. 16 wedding, the pair's two daughters, photos and videos of Anderson and her groom, Bradley Mackeson — and one rather controversial vid of Shepard giving Anderson a joking lap dance as onlookers cheer and laugh.

"I love this and it looks like an [absolutely] beautiful day, but I’d be kinda weirded out if my 'dad' gave me a lap dance," one Instagram commenter wrote.

"That’s so sweet but the lap dance is weird if you consider her like one of your kids..." another commented.

Despite the critiques, Anderson shared the clip to her Instagram story, writing that the lap dance was her "favorite wedding gift."

On Tuesday, Shepard also made an appearance on his eff won with DRS podcast, where he explained the backstory behind the video. According to the actor, Anderson's friends set a chair in the middle of the dance floor for the purpose of giving her lap dances.

"They pull a chair out and then they throw Hannah in the chair. And you kind of immediately realize like, 'Oh, people are going to give her lap dances,'" Shepard said on the podcast episode. "A few different gals are giving her lap dances. I don’t know why I decide this, but I’m like, a girl should have a lap dance from a guy."

He also acknowledged the absurdity of calling himself a surrogate parent to Anderson and then immediately dancing for her.

"As I walked away all of a sudden I thought, 'Oh, crap, her dad,'" Shepard said on the episode. "Right before I walked over to the dance floor, I said, 'Listen, we love being her surrogate parents!'"

Anderson, Bell and Shepard have a relationship spanning several years, and she has even made appearances on Shepard's podcast, "Armchair Expert," where they discussed how the actor found her music on YouTube while she was still a high schooler in Texas.

“I listened to it over and over again," Shepard said of Anderson's cover of "Blood" by Middle East. "Then I came home and I told Kristen, 'Oh my God, you have to watch this girl sing.'"

In the 2018 podcast episode, the pair recalled how Anderson reached out to Shepard letting him know that she was in California to compete on American Idol — but she was voted off just hours later. Instead, Shepard invited her to the couple's home to perform and hang out.

"You came over and then you were generous enough to play for us in the living room. And again I cried," Shepard recalled.

"It was so funny and cute. You were beside yourself that she was in our living room, and you kept saying, 'I manifested this,'" Bell quipped.

Anderson now performs under the artist name "Sister," and seemingly continues to have a close relationship with Shepard and Bell.
