Watch David Letterman’s Grand Return to ‘The Late Show’ — His First Time Back Since Stephen Colbert Took Over
David Letterman spent 23 years hosting 'The Late Show' on CBS before he retired in 2015
David Letterman has made his return to late night.
The iconic talk-show host, who spent 23 years on the air before exiting his CBS show in 2015, appeared on his successor Stephen Colbert's The Late Show on Monday.
"Ladies and gentlemen, my guest tonight certainly needs no introduction,” Colbert told the audience. "Please welcome back to the Ed Sullivan Theater — Mr. David Letterman."
He was more than well received as the audience gave him a standing ovation and chanted, "David!"
The attention appeared to make Letterman bashful as he joked, "Stephen, control your people. This is the most enthusiastic audience I have been near since the night I announced I was quitting. Wow, that was great. Thank you very much."
Letterman also looked back at his 4,000 episodes of The Late Show, calling them "all damn good."

As for his current life as an empty nester following his and Regina Lasko's son Harry's departure to college last year, Letterman suggested he now has a little too much free time.
"I spend a lot of time Googling symptoms," he said, noting that he and Lasko once laughed that they'd either have another child or get divorced.
Letterman has been no stranger to the small screen since his departure nearly 10 years ago. He now hosts his own Netflix series My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, which premiered its fourth season last year.
