David Beckham and Victoria Beckham are used to the white-hot glare of the spotlight thanks to their superstar careers, storybook pairing and enviable family. Together for over two decades, they have defied the odds and opened up for the first time about the toughest moment in their marriage.

"It was the hardest period for us because it felt like the world was against us. And here’s the thing, we were against each other, if I’m being completely honest," Victoria said in Beckham — the new four-part documentary on Netflix covering David's storied soccer career and life. She was addressing 2004, when David was accused of having an affair while he was playing for Real Madrid in Spain following a storied run with Manchester United.

"Up until Madrid, sometimes it felt like us against everybody else but we were together, we were connected, we had each other. But when we were in Spain it didn’t really feel like we had each other either. And that’s sad," she said in the documentary, according to the UK's Independent.

"It was the first time that me and Victoria had been put under that kind of pressure in our marriage," David said, talking about the "difficult" period as he adjusted to his new professional reality as well.

"When I first moved to Spain, erm, it was difficult because I… I’d been part of a club and a family for my whole career, from the age of 15 [until] I was 27 years old. I get sold overnight, the next minute I am in a city, I don’t speak the language, more importantly I didn’t have my family," he said.

“I don’t know how we got through it in all honesty. Victoria's everything to me. To see her hurt was incredibly difficult. But we’re fighters. And at that time we needed to fight for each other, we needed to fight for our family. And what we had was worth fighting for. But ultimately, it’s our private life."

David, who co-owns Inter Miami (and famously helped lure Lionel Messi to play stateside), spoke about feeling "physically sick every day" during that period.

The pair endured and have built a close-knit family — they share kids Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper — and thriving businesses together.

"You work together. It’s a bit of give and take, always. And marriage is hard work," David shared in an interview with The Telegraph about his hard-earned marriage advice.

"We’re busy. I always tell Victoria I’m more busy, but she says she is. We have four kids who are always going in different directions, but you have to prioritise your time with each other. That’s what we’ve always done, and it seems to be working."
