David Beckham’s Son Cruz Didn’t Know He Was ‘So Good’ at Soccer

The retired soccer star's rise to fame was documented in 'Beckham,' which premiered on Netflix in October

David Beckham may be one of the best soccer players the sport has seen, but that doesn't necessarily mean his kids have always been aware of his on-the-pitch legacy.

While speaking to Allure in a new profile published on Dec. 15, the former Manchester United athlete's wife Victoria Beckham revealed that their son Cruz, 18, did not realize just how talented his dad was until after their four-part docuseries, Beckham, premiered earlier this year.

"The other night, me and David drove to our country house and went to the local pub," she said, adding that by the time they left, "someone had put a note under the windscreen wiper: 'Dear Posh and Becks, On behalf of all the British football fans, we are sorry.' David joked, 'We need to go out and lap this up more often.'"

She continued, "Cruz, our youngest son, said, 'Wow, I had no idea Dad was so good at football [soccer].' It made me laugh, when I come up on the screen: 'David Beckham’s wife.' Brilliant."

Beckham, which hit Netflix in October, explores David's life and career, including his most monumental – and controversial – moments.

Both he and Victoria addressed rumors that he had an affair in 2004 while he was playing for Real Madrid in Spain following a storied run with Manchester United. Their candid interview marked the first time either of them have spoken about the rumors.

"It was the hardest period for us because it felt like the world was against us. And here's the thing, we were against each other, if I'm being completely honest," Victoria admitted. "Up until Madrid, sometimes it felt like us against everybody else but we were together, we were connected, we had each other. But when we were in Spain it didn't really feel like we had each other either. And that's sad."

He added, "I don't know how we got through it in all honesty. Victoria's everything to me. To see her hurt was incredibly difficult. But we're fighters. And at that time we needed to fight for each other, we needed to fight for our family. And what we had was worth fighting for. But ultimately, it's our private life."

David and Victoria met in 1997 and tied the knot in 1999. Together they share four children: Brooklyn, 24, Romeo, 21, Cruz and 12-year-old Harper.
