Everything to Know About the 'Cyberpunk 2077' Live Action Project - The Messenger
It's time to break the news. The Messenger's slogan

Cyberpunk 2077 is the latest video game to get a live-action adaptation. On Oct. 5, game developer CD Projekt Red announced a partnership with production company Anonymous Content to develop a "project" based on the popular action role-playing game that's described as "a brand-new story set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077."

The project is still in early development, and there isn't much to know about it yet — it's not even clear whether it will be a show or a movie (though the scope of the world and the producers' prior credits seem to indicate that a show is more likely). But there's enough information out there to get fans of the game and its acclaimed anime spinoff Cyberpunk: Edgerunners excited. Here's what we know so far.

Cyberpunk 2077 release date

TLDR: The project is still in very early development, so it is likely years away.

THE DETAILS: Like we said, the developers haven't even decided if this will be a show or a movie so it'll be years before the project is ready. The closest analogue to Cyberpunk 2077 is The Witcher, which is also (partially) based on a CD Projekt Red game. That Netflix series was announced in May 2017 and premiered in Dec. 2019. We'll see which comes out first, the live-action project or Project Orion, the working title for the game sequel that's also in the works.

Cyberpunk 2077 cast

TLDR: There's no cast yet, but the game features some big stars who could reprise their roles.

THE DETAILS: Cyberpunk 2077 is famous for featuring Keanu Reeves in its cast. Reeves provides voice and motion-capture for Johnny Silverhand, a rock star/terrorist who plays an important role in the game. And Idris Elba stars in the recently released Phantom Liberty expansion as an ex-special forces soldier named Solomon Reed. We have to assume that they'll be the first actors approached for whatever this project turns out to be, but we'll see if they come back for the live-action version.

Cyberpunk 2077 creative team

TLDR: CD Projekt Red and Anonymous Content are searching for a writer to oversee the project.

THE DETAILS: So far, the only names attached to the project are Anonymous Content Studios’ Head of Television Garret Kemble, Director of Development Ryan Schwartz, Chief Creative Officer David Levine, and producer Bard Dorros, who will all be executive producers. Anonymous Content is an award-winning production company behind shows like Mr. Robot and True Detective and movies like Spotlight and The Revenant. Manager Charlie Scully of The Gotham Group will also produce.

Cyberpunk 2077 source material

TLDR: No plot has been announced for the project, but there is a big world to draw inspiration from.

THE DETAILS: The video game Cyberpunk 2077 is itself based on a table-top game called Cyberpunk created by designer Mike Pondsmith. It's a sci-fi role-playing game set in a complex future-dystopian world of cybernetics and advanced AI. The plot of the video game Cyberpunk 2077 follows V, a mercenary in the California megacity Night City. After a heist goes wrong, they (V can be any gender) ends up with a "bio-chip" in their head containing the consciousness of a famous multi-hypenate hacker named Johnny Silverhand. Silverhand's mind is starting to overwrite V's own, and V and Silverhand have to work together to finish Silverhand's world-changing mission and save V's life.

Cyberpunk 2077 trailer

THE DETAILS: There's no trailer yet, but we'll share it here whenever it becomes available.

Where to watch Cyberpunk 2077

THE DETAILS: There's no streaming service attached to Cyberpunk 2077 yet, but anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is available to stream on Netflix, if you'd like to get a sense of what a Cyberpunk show could be like.
