Boy George Says Janet Jackson ‘Wasn’t Friendly’ When They First Met

Legendary singer Boy George is opening up about an awkward interaction with fellow pop star Janet Jackson.

"When it comes to me and Janet, let's wait a while," the "Karma Chameleon" singer wrote about their relationship in his new memoir, Karma: My Autobiography, which was released Tuesday.

The two first bumped into each other on the set of the TV series Solid Gold in the '80s, and George recalled meeting her "without my face on," noting that Jackson allegedly "wasn't friendly and didn't try to be."

He then "walked off and got myself into my best 'Boy George' and was walking around backstage to make sure I was seen by everyone," he explained.

Later, a member of her crew approached him with a video camera and asked him to record a message for Jackson, and he said, "Next time you meet someone, be nice."

Following the call out, George was ushered to Jackson's dressing room where she allegedly said she didn't recognize him earlier in the evening. "Are you saying you would have been nice to me if you knew who I was?" George replied.

"We parted on awkward terms," he continued. When they saw each other at another TV show a few years later, George claimed Jackson "looked straight through me."

George reflected on the moment in an interview with People published Wednesday. "When you write a book like this, there's a chance you're going to bump into someone that you've written about," he said. "I have to say what I've written about people is the truth of what happened and how they behaved. So I'm kind of comfortable with that. I'm always someone who's prepared to bury the hatchet because there's always another opportunity to be different."

But George doesn't seem to think rekindling his relationship with Jackson is likely. "There's certain people I'm never gonna be friends with unless a miracle happens," he said, "and I guess I put her in that category."

He does still have respect for her, he noted. "I love Janet Jackson's music and I love Madonna and I love all the people I've written about," said George. "I suppose when you write things about other artists, it's also — note to self — you remember that perhaps there's been times in your life when you weren't friendly to everyone you met."
