Boosie BadAzz Complains About ‘The Color Purple’ LGBTQ Love Story: ‘I Had to Walk Out’

Several people pointed out to Boosie BadAzz that Alice Walker's 1982 novel 'The Color Purple' — upon which the 1985 movie and 2005 Broadway musical are also based — was inherently queer

Boosie BadAzz is making his thoughts known on LGBTQ+ representation after a recent moviegoing experience with his daughter.

The rapper said in a heated post on X (formerly Twitter) that he had to walk out of The Color Purple as he wasn't aware of the musical remake and its source material's LGBTQ+ themes.

"I HAD TO WALK OUT THIS COLOR PURPLE MOVIE ( N TWO OTHER OLDER COUPLES WALKED OUT ALSO.) BECAUSE I HAD MY LITTLE GIRLS WITH ME N IT SEEMED LIKE A [rainbow emoji] LOVE STORY‼️GOOD ACTING BUT WHOEVER WROTE THE SCRIPT IS PUSHING THE NARRATIVE HARD ‼️AS A PARENT I WILL NOT LET MY LITTLE GIRL WATCH THIS FILM."

Several people in the replies and quotes were quick to point out that Alice Walker's 1982 novel — upon which the 1985 Steven Spielberg movie and 2005 Tony-winning Broadway musical are also based — was inherently queer.

"The romance between Shug and Celie is prominently featured. That was a huge part of Celie's self-discovery. That's prominent in the first film," one person replied. "I f--- with you bro but this one on you for not doing your homework."

"U clearly never seen the first one either, AND u got a gay daughter. This tweet all over the place," wrote another person.

Boosie (real name Torence Hatch Jr.) has been outspokenly anti-LGBTQ in the past, stating in February that his daughter Poison Ivi "won't be accepted" in their family after coming out, but he will still "love her to death."

The rapper has also publicly disparaged bisexual rapper Lil Nas X, as well as Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union's transgender daughter Zaya Wade.

The Color Purple is now playing in theaters.
