Princess Diana once had Barbra Streisand's back.

In Streisand's newly released memoir My Name Is Barbra, the singer recounted meeting the royal for the first time at the 1992 premiere of The Prince of Tides.

Not only was Princess Diana "warm and friendly," Streisand recalled, but she helped the Funny Girl star narrowly avoid a wardrobe malfunction.

When the movie ended, Streisand waited until the princess stood up, out of courtesy. "I was told that the princess has to stand up first...that was royal protocol...but instead Diana was smiling and clapping along with everyone else and she whispered to me, 'You must stand up,'" she wrote. "I said, 'Really? You're supposed to stand up first. Are you sure it's all right?' She said, 'Absolutely!' and gave me a little push."

That's when Princess Diana lent a helping hand. "The zipper on my skirt had come down a bit as I was sitting, and she noticed and quickly started to zip it up for me as I got to my feet," Streisand recalled.

After zipping her up, the royal told Streisand how "wonderful" she was in the film. "I thought Diana was wonderful," the singer wrote. "I wonder if she knew how wonderful she was."

Looking back on Princess Diana and her legacy, Streisand noted how impressive it was that she visited hospitals and held the hands of AIDS patients.

"Her kind, open attitude did a lot to destigmatize the disease," she said.
