Andre Braugher’s Funniest Moments Ever on ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’

The actor died on Monday at the age of 61, so we're celebrating his life with some of his funniest 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' moments

Andre Braugher in Brooklyn Nine-Nine NBC

Andre Braugher was known to many as a great dramatic actor, a Juilliard-trained powerhouse with a booming voice and the ability to be both intimidating and comforting at the same time. He was the breakout star of Homicide: Life on the Streets as Detective Frank Pembleton, and was later one of the few who could tame Dr. Gregory House on House. More recently, though, he was beloved by millions as Captain Raymond Holt of Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

A show about goofy cops in the 2010s was not without its issues, but at least it gave us a picture of what a police precinct could look like, with the right person in charge. Holt — a somewhat mysterious gay police captain obsessed with classical music and his corgi, Cheddar — was the heart of the show, and Braugher made him feel both like someone who could protect you and someone who needed protecting. He also managed to deliver the show's funniest lines on a regular basis, and when someone asks me about my favorite scenes from one of my favorite shows, he's at the center of most of them.

Braugher died on Monday, and so to honor the joy he brought to us all, here are some of Captain Holt's Brooklyn Nine-Nine moments that still make me laugh, no matter how many times I've watched them.

When Rosa said he and his husband needed to 'bone'

After the squad got put on night shifts, Holt was in a constant bad mood. Rosa suggested he and his husband needed to "bone," which, as it turns out, is a word that Holt is unable to process. (For the record: Rosa was right, though.)

When Holt and Jake had the mumps

While working on a cold case, Holt and Jake both caught the mumps, which led to them being quarantined together for many days as they both lost their minds. Holt named his swollen gland Balthazar and declared him "a thirsty bitch."

When Amy was late to work

The whole squad shared their theories for why the usually-prompt Amy was late, and Holt guessed that she was in line at the bank. When she arrived and revealed that she was, in fact, in line at the bank, Holt unleashed the greatest line reading of "hot damn" that has ever been uttered.

His love of Cheddar

Cheddar was not just some common pooch! While Holt's love of his beloved corgi was always hilarious, it reached a new level when the dog was kidnapped. Holt pulled out the grenades and threatened to fire Jake simply for not taking the case seriously enough. Never get between a man and his fluffy, fluffy dog.

When he had to pretend to be straight

Holt and Jake were briefly sent to Florida as part of the Witness Protection Program, and Holt pretended to be a straight man named Greg who was getting over the loss of his wife, who he awkwardly described as "a strong, female woman with nice heavy breasts."

His reaction to the death of his enemy, Madeline Wuntch

No man has ever been happier about anything ever than Holt was when his nemesis went down. Not even learning she was a Korean toilet ghost would have shocked him more because he already knew that. Boring!

When he ruined Jake and Amy's honeymoon

Just before Jake and Amy's honeymoon to Mexico, Holt found out he didn't get the police commissioner job, so he accidentally found himself joining his employees on their vacation. He got a bunch of new shirts, including a bright yellow one with a pineapple wearing a thong that said "Slut," and moped so hard that he completely ruined the romantic vibes and Amy's sexy Die Hard cosplay.

When he ate a "marshed mallow"

The squad did their best impressions of Holt eating a marshmallow, and only Boyle got it right with a gleeful bunch of giggles.

His sassy insults

Sure, some of his burns are only burns in the land of Holt, but this 20-minute compilation is nothing but 20 minutes of perfection. "That's a great thought... for an idiot to have!" Yas queen.

All of Brooklyn Nine-Nine is streaming on Peacock.
