The strikes are over, and Oscar season is finally getting into full swing now that actors can promote their Academy Awards-contending movies. The 96th Academy Awards will take place as they normally do in March (the ceremony won't be delayed like the Emmys), and will be hosted by a very familiar face who is making a return to the show. Read on for everything to know about the 2024 Oscars telecast, including host, air date and how to watch.

When are the 2024 Academy Awards? 

TLDR: The 96th Academy Awards ceremony will air live on ABC on Sunday, March 10, 2024, from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

THE DETAILS: For the first time ever, the Oscars telecast will start an hour early. On Nov. 30, ABC announced that the Oscars will air live coast to coast 7-10:30 p.m. ET/4-7:30 p.m. PT, which is an earlier time slot than usual. A 30-minute pre-show starting at 6:30 ET/3:30 p.m. PT will lead into the live show. After the ceremony, ABC will air a new episode of the Emmy-winning comedy series Abbott Elementary. The Oscars telecast will also be rebroadcast in the Pacific Time zone in primetime after the live presentation.

The 2024 Oscars will honor the best films released in 2023.

Who is hosting 96th Academy Awards?

TLDR: Jimmy Kimmel will return for his fourth stint as host with this year because his second time in a row.

THE DETAILS: ABC announced on Nov. 15 that the Jimmy Kimmel Live! host will return to the Oscars stage once more. He previously hosted in 2017 (the Moonlight/La La Land fiasco), 2018, and 2023.

Who are the nominees for the 2024 Oscars? 

TLDR: Nominations will be announced on Jan. 24.

THE DETAILS: After the eligibility period ends on Dec. 31, Academy voters will make their picks by Jan. 16, and the nominees will be announced a week later.

Oppenheimer is the early Oscar favorite. On the awards predictor site Gold Derby, the hit biographical drama is currently the odds-on favorite for Best Picture, Best Director (Christopher Nolan), Best Actor (Cillian Murphy), Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing.

Other leading contenders include Emma Stone for Poor Things, Da'Vine Joy Randolph for The Holdovers and Eric Roth and Martin Scorsese for the screenplay for Killers of the Flower Moon.
