Barbie Movie Gooses Doll Sales for Mattel
The company projects the Barbie movie will generate $125 million in 2023 sales from its cut of box-office tickets, movie-related toy sales and other products
Mattel Chairman and CEO Ynon Kreiz said Barbie has helped boost sales in the quarter immediately after the film's July release.
"The company benefited from the success of the Barbie movie with significant contributions from box office participation, the movie toy line and consumer product partnerships," Kreiz told investors in a call on Wednesday.
Gross billings for Mattel dolls surged 27% to $884.5 million in the third quarter, up from $697.2 million in the same period last year. Barbies alone made up a big portion of the billings, at $605.1 million.
Mattel saw its overall net sales jump 9% year-over-year to $1.9 billion in the quarter ending Sept. 30.
The company expects the Barbie movie to generate $125 million in sales for the full year from its cut of box-office sales, movie-related toy sales and consumer products.
The film has grossed $1.4 billion at the worldwide box office since premiering on July 19, 2023.
