Facebook and Instagram users had some feelings when Mark Zuckerberg posted a picture of himself enjoying a cut of beef from a cow fed with macadamia feed and beer.

The Facebook co-founder said the beef came from his Ko'olau Ranch on Hawaii’s Kauai Island.

“The cattle are wagyu and angus, and they'll grow up eating macadamia meal and drinking beer that we grow and produce here on the ranch,” Zuckerberg wrote. “We want the whole process to be local and vertically integrated.”

Reactions to his post were predictably mixed. Some were concerned about the environmental impact, and others suggested he go vegan or vegetarian.

Most commenters, though, just thought it looked delectable.

“That looks delicious!” Facebook user Farjana Mitu wrote. “Enjoy your meal and have a wonderful time!”

Instagram user Kevin Jones was less commendatory.

“That is an absolutely ridiculous waste of money, land, and resources,” Jones wrote.

Some were curious about Zuckerberg’s use of a coaster, which was placed over top his glass of water, rather than underneath it.

“Someone please explain to Mark Zuckerberg how coasters are meant to work,” Sam Jarman of Sydney posted on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter.

Instagram user Katee was one of several who chastised Zuckerberg for his meat consumption.

“Keep destroying the environment,” she wrote. “Raising cattle is one of the biggest causes of greenhouse gasses. Such a disgusting and entitled thing to be doing.”

In his Facebook and Instagram posts, the billionaire owner of Meta, the parent company of both Facebook and Instagram, said his goal “is to create some of the highest quality beef in the world.”

Some respondents applauded his ambitions.

“Excellent move Mark. Agriculture is the solution,” Facebook user John Abraham Godson wrote. “I hope you will use your technology empire to promote resolving the food crisis in needy places of the world.”
