If You Live in These States and Still Need Your New Year’s Champagne, You Might Be Out of Luck
Utah, Mississippi, Texas and North Carolina do not allow liquor to be sold at retail stores on Sundays
If you live in certain states and waited until the last minute to buy booze for your New Year’s Eve party, you may have to resort to beer.
Texas, Utah, Mississippi and North Carolina do not permit liquor sales on Sundays and all but Mississippi won’t let you buy it on holidays like New Year’s Day either. A change in North Carolina’s liquor laws was proposed in September, but retail sales are so far still verboten on Sundays, according to various local news reports.
“Plan your celebrations and libations accordingly,” Utah’s tourism website warns.
You can still buy alcoholic beverages of all kinds in bars and restaurants regardless of the day. And stores are still able to sell beer — and wine, in the case of Texas — on Sundays in those states. You just won’t be drinking vodka sodas or rum and cokes if you didn’t load up before New Year’s Eve.
In some states Sunday sales aren’t cut and dry, so best to check before heading out. Nine states including Georgia and Florida let counties decide whether or not to allow them, according to a tally by USA Today. And Ohio requires retailers to obtain a special permit to sell liquor on Sundays.
