‘Life-Threatening’ Allergy Warning Prompts Recall of Dry Hot Sauces
The packaging on the products does not say the flour used in the hot sauce is wheat flour, according to the FDA
The Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday that a popular line of dry hot sauces is being recalled after the manufacturer failed to include a warning on the label that it contained wheat.
“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” the news release says.
The recalled products include Benny T’s Vesta Dry Hot Sauce Ghost, Benny T’s Vesta Dry Hot Sauce, Benny T’s Vesta Dry Hot Sauce Reaper, Benny T’s Vesta Dry Hot Sauce Scorpion and Benny T’s Vesta Dry Hot Sauce Very Hot.
The North Carolina Department of Agriculture contacted the hot sauce brand’s parent company, Vesta Fiery Gourmet Foods, on Thursday to let them know that the packaging should say that the flour used in the products is wheat flour.
The recalled hot sauces were sold online or distributed to retail stores between Oct. 1 and Jan. 4.
No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled products, the FDA said.
A representative of Vesta did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
