‘Barbie’ Is Officially the Highest-Grossing Movie of 2023
The iconic doll has booted the 'Super Mario Bros.' movie from the top spot
The Barbie movie dethroned Super Mario Bros. Monday to become the highest grossing movie of 2023.
Warner Brothers Discovery’s Barbie has made $1.38 billion in global box office revenues since its mid-July release, now surpassing the Universal’s Super Mario Bros. $1.36 billion, according to data from Box Office Mojo.
Oppenheimer, which was released on the same day as Barbie and spurred the “Barbenheimer” craze, comes in third in global box office revenues at $853 million.
Last week, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie became Warner Bros. Discovery’s highest grossing movie ever, snatching the studio's title held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 since 2011.
As of Monday, Barbie has made nearly $610 million in domestic box office revenue.
Super Mario Bros. has also made box office history since its April release, becoming the highest-grossing film based on a video game in just one week. It became the first movie based on a video game to gross $1 billion worldwide and overtook Minions in May to become the highest-grossing film released by animation company Illumination Entertainment.
