Torrential rains and flooding have caused airline delays at all of New York’s major airports on Friday, with water inundating the terminal Spirit and Frontier use at LaGuardia Airport.

LaGuardia’s Terminal A, the Marine Air Terminal that has the two low-cost airlines, was “closed until further notice,” the airport posted on X Friday. The city received more than 5 inches of rain Friday morning.

The Federal Aviation Administration imposed ground delay programs at New York’s three primary airports on Friday. The average delay at JFK International was more than three hours and more than two for LaGuardia, according to the FAA.

Streets were flooded across New York City and subway service was "extremely limited" due to the torrential rains, which interrupted commuters and travelers across the regions. Meteorologists forecasted that New Yorkers would see between three and five inches of rain on Friday.

Only 12% of flights into JFK International were on time Friday as of 1 p.m. local time, according to Anuvu’s Pulse dashboard. JFK had three dozen flight cancelations, with more than 120 at LaGuardia, according to FlightAware, a flight-tracking service.

As of 2 p.m. ET, 425 flights were canceled at the three major New York airports.

Among airlines, Delta canceled nearly 3% of its flights Friday, along with 20% of flights by Republic Airways, a regional carrier for Delta with a large concentration of its flights in New York. Endeavor Air, a Delta subsidiary with flights at LaGuardia and JFK, canceled 8.4% on Friday.

American Airlines canceled 2.8% of its schedule, and Spirit 1.9%, according to Anuvu data. United and its hub west of the city, in Newark, were less affected by the weather on Friday. The rains also accounted for 15 diverted flights Friday at the three New York airports.

The downpour Friday followed rain on four of the previous five days that soaked New York earlier in the week, leaving the ground saturated.
